24th February 15
On Monday, February 23, the Consul of Ireland, Mr. Rory Patrick Byrne, visited Newton College. The Consul met with students and teachers. The main purpose of this visit was to attend, as a special guest, an Irish themed meeting by students of 2nd ESO.
The workshop was focused on a traditional Irish story called “The Land of the Ever Young”. For Irish mythology and folklore, it represents one of the names for the afterlife, the other world, a place where beauty, health, wealth, happiness exists. Students prepared a very special presentation with a variety of activities that included a performance of traditional Irish dance.
This is one of the many activities that students are performing as part of learning about other cultures. This is done by organising assemblies where students have to choose stories from around the world, and are able to develop an international awareness. The Irish Consul saw the result of this mythological tale, which was translated into a travelogue for classmates and teachers.
Following the assembly, the Consul had a guided tour of Newton College and had the opportunity to meet with students and teachers participating in this engaging project.
